Service repair call in Dudley to a Canon ipf8100 Keep saying “no media loaded” when media was loaded into the printer.

12th August 2010:

1st Call 4 Service callout to a Canon ipf8100 printer “with no media load” message when media was loaded.

Customer up-ended and moved printer 3 floors down some stairs and without knowing and using “MOVE PRINTER level 0, 1, 2 or 3” program within maintenance menu area.  Ink had leaked out of the open reservoir in the internal area of the printer, about 1900 ml of ink all down the stairs and in the printer!

When 1st Call 4 Serviced arrived the printer was switched on and asking for new ink cartridges as the printer had tried to refill reservoirs and emptied the old ink cartridges.  Customer had ordered cartridges from 1st Call 4 service to arrive at the same.  We needed to replace maintenance cartridge after fitting ink cartridges due to that being next message.  Got back to the media message “no media loaded” which after having taken left hand cover off I found that ink was over the media advance encoder disk.  Very similar to the fault on HP Z6100 Designjet the Friday before!

Cleaned disk with water on clean cloth and dried.  Re-tested printer all okay.

Some information about move printer routine from service manual:  Amount of ink which will be needed to be drained into the maintenance cartridge on below programs for moving printer.

Level 0 = no ink emptied into maintenance cartridge. no tilt or rotate

Level 1 = no ink emptied into maintenance cartridge. 30% tilt 10% rotate

Level 2 = 600ml of ink emptied into maintenance cartridge. 30% tilt 30% rotate

Level 3 = 1900ml of ink emptied into maintenance cartridge. able to up-end printer

If maintenance cartridge is above 20% there is a reset in printer service mode which will reset the chip on cartridge after you cleaned the ink out and dried sponge in cartridge which will allow you to use maintenance cartridge again.

Could you tell more about how to reset the chip on maintenance cartridge? I can’t find the menu on the printer.

    • Hi Phillip

This ‘may’ not work if the waste cart is below 20% capacity.

To reset chip back to empty status,

With printer off hold down the paper feed selection and information button whilst pressing the power button. Release buttons when ‘initializing’ appears on LCD. Leave a few mins to boot up. Press menu and you should see ‘SERVICE MENU’. Press down arrow to show ‘DISPLAY’
then right arrow until you see ‘INITIALIZE’ then down arrow and you will see ‘WARNING’ then right arrow until you see ‘W-INK’. With ‘W-INK’ on the screen press the OK button and you will see an ‘=’ flash up for a second. Now power the printer off and back on in the normal way using just the power button. Waste cart chip should be reset back to empty status.

The tanks will still fill up and can overflow so check their is capacity in the cart, you can always soak up waste ink from the pads using paper towels, so this is a temporary fix to get by.
